Cindy Pickard writes: My great grandfather
was Nels Christian Holmes. My mom was just starting to write down
memories before she died. I really appreciate some of the stories.
This is one passage that she had about her grandfather, Nels Christian
Holmes.
"I also have a memory of my grandfather Holmes.
He lived in Colorado but came to stay in Elkhorn with us following
surgery. Hed tell us stories of his youth. He was seventeen
when he came to the United States from Denmark. He was sponsored
by a Turnquist family in South Omaha who signed to care for him
until he could support himself. He couldnt speak English
and all he knew how to order was coffee and doughnuts - and lived
on them from New York to Omaha. Times have changed and there are
agencies to help in a persons transition now."
Just this last week I have made contact with people
that have information about his brother Soren Holmes. One of his
daughters was Oda (Holmes) Marecek, who is buried at Graceland
Park Cemetery at Omaha, Nebraska.
Nels Christian Holmes was married to Ingeborg Fredrikson.
They had 9 children: Elizabeth Holmes, Carl Oscar Holmes, Hesel
Holmes, Anna (Holmes) Sprint, Christian Fredrick "Fred"
Holmes, Ida Marie Holmes, Nels Henry Envole Holmes, Alice (Holmes)
Horning, and Agnes (Holmes) Steckelberg.
