The statue was commissioned in 1917 from Daniel Chester French, the sculptor who did the seated Lincoln Memorial statue, which is in Washington D.C.  He subsequently said he felt the statue was his best work.  It is signed by him, on the bottom of the statue, and dated that same year.

It is about 10 feet tall, very imposing and quite lovely.  It sits in a small, shady, landscaped park, with matching benches and a wrought iron fence.  In the summer, with the fountain going and the water flowing over the sides of the bowl, it’s a beautiful place to sit and just listen to the water and the birds.  It’s in a quiet area, and usually there’s no traffic and no people around.
